Wet areas of yards like natural low spots or places where sump pumps discharge are a hassle for homeowners.
Many times, these areas can easily be transitioned from turf grass to native plantings. Not only does this provide a lovely accent to a yard, but the deep roots of native plants help to infiltrate water into the soil and dry things out a bit!
This backyard area received runoff from the alley. Instead of mowing a sloppy mess for the whole summer, the turf grass was eliminated and native plants and grasses were planted in the area. With a mini-walking trail looping through this garden, kids love to make this space their “plant fort” and watch the hummingbirds, monarchs, and finches flit around the garden from their hiding spot amongst the plants!
